I‘ve officially made The Good Housekeeping Illustrated Cookbook our family Cookbook.
For a few years now my husband and I have been empty-nesters. Although it has a few perks such as less laundry and lower grocery bills, I do miss the energy my girls bring to our home.
But I’m happy to say they’re successfully launched, healthy and enjoying life to the fullest. Yet, having an empty house was quite a change for me, I had to find a new way to parent. First of all, I wasn’t sure of my role in their independent life. I tried to find ways to help them create the life they wanted. It gave me focus and it was exciting to watch them grow and establish their homes.
A big part of living on your own is preparing meals.
It was one of my biggest struggles when I had my first apartment, so I thought this would be a good place to start.
Your diet is a bank account. Good food choices are good investments
And I have to admit; I’m not sure I prepared them to fend for themselves in the kitchen. So I decided to give them the cookbook that helped me as a new cook. The Good Housekeeping All-American Cookbook was my bible. I know, I know its one hundred years old, but it gives step by step directions, and the recipes are delicious.
Also, every dish I’ve made from this cookbook has been a winner. I kid you not! It’s my go-to resource for finding answers to cooking questions and getting ideas. A few of my favorite recipes are the Pumpkin Bread, Chicken and Rice Soup, Peanut Butter Candy Tops.
But my go to recipe I’ve been making for years is the Minestrone. This soup is delicious served with parmesan cheese and crusty bread. Add a side salad, and you’re good to go!
I’ve used it for all different occasions. It’s the perfect welcome dish for guests after a long travel day. Make it for an evening Book Club meeting when you need something light to serve. I’ve even used it as a weekday meal.
You can make it on the stove top and then transfer it to the crockpot to keep it warm. It’s perfect! It’s gluten-free and vegetarian if you substitute vegetable broth for the beef broth.
They discontinued the one I have The Good Housekeeping All-American Cookbook, so I purchased the newer version for my daughters.
Both are fantastic cookbooks and would make wonderful gifts.
