Mister Pip

MISTER PIP by Lloyd Jones was shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize in 2007. It's only about 300 pages long, but it packs a profound message about life. It takes place in the 1990's on a tropical island, which is experiencing a brutal civil war. As the island is invaded many people flee leaving one teacher left in the village. The narrator of this masterfully written story is a 13-year-old island girl named Matilda. With her haunting voice she tells the story of how this eccentric teacher reads GREAT EXPECTATIONS by Charles Dickens aloud to the village children, in what is left of their schoolhouse. How this simple act unites and divides this community is insightful and inspiring. This book is exceptional and would make an excellent book club choice.Back.
