Nominated for an Edgar Award and shortlisted for 2009 John Creasy “New Blood” Dagger Award, John Fuller’s debut novel SWEETSMOKE is a fabulous read. It takes place on a Virginia plantation during the civil war in the 1800’s. We learn about the farm life first hand through the protagonist Cassius, a longtime slave searching for the killer of freed slave who was a dear friend and mentor. Fuller vividly describes slave life and the feeling of being owned by another person. He captures the relationships between slaves and masters and more intriguing those between slaves, through excellent storytelling and characterization. This is a thought provoking and emotional read. It would provide a lively discussion for a book club.Back.
