In The Garden of Beasts

I’ve read Larson’s “Devil in a White City” and like that book, this one is informative, well researched and very detailed. Interspersed with the remarkable detail Larson weaves in a human side to this story, it flows nicely and keeps it interesting. He also poses some intriguing questions as to why Hitler and his regime weren’t initially perceived as a danger and why the warning signs were not recognized or acted upon. This book is the story of William Dodd – FDR's first ambassador to Germany and his futile attempt to warn State Department officials of the growing malignancy of Hitler’s regime. Larson astutely captures the inefficiency of governments and the complacency of the German people that allows Hitler to rise to power.Back.
