This book isnít one you will breeze through quickly. Itís descriptive, thought provoking, and emotional. Youíll want to take your time reading it as there is a lot to absorb, and the subject matter is at times difficult to imagine. The author draws you in with the voice of a young girl trapped in the middle of the Cambodian genocide during the 1970ís. The story centers on a privileged family evicted from their home and forced into slave labor by the Khmer Rouge. Itís loosely based on the authorís history and reveals the horrific and violent circumstances which the people of Cambodia endured. The story focuses on human relationships and family bonds giving the reader a better understanding of this tumultuous time. It would make an excellent Book Club choice.Back.
