One of my all time favorite books is HALF OF A YELLOW SUN by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, so when AMERICANAH was released I couldn’t wait to read it. The word AMERICANAH is used to describe a Nigerian, who goes to the United States and returns to Nigeria Americanized. The book revolves around the protagonist Ifemelu, a young Nigerian girl who moves to the United States to seek an education and a better life for herself. She leaves behind her family and her first love to seek her future. While in America she makes her living writing a blog about racism and the differences between being an American black and a Non-American black. In the blog, she describes her encounters with racism and the challenges she faces. Adichie gives a stark portrayal of the cultural differences through wit and humor as she describes Ifemulu struggles to adjust to her new surroundings. It is a beautifully written saga of family, love, and acceptance. Once again I did not want to book to end and found it to be a very satisfying read. It would make an excellent book club choice.Back.
