Beneath A Scarlet Sky

Historical Fiction is one of my favorite genres, so I was excited to listen to the audiobook, Beneath the Scarlett Sky by Mark Sullivan. This little known piece of history is about the strength of the human spirit and the bravery of a teenage boy Pino Lello. Pino is a typical teenager living in Milan during the Nazi occupation. Of course, nothing remains the same after bombs destroy his home and he is forced to make tough decisions far beyond his years. He begins by joining the resistance and helps Italian Jews escape over the Swiss Alps; then he enlists in the German army to become a spy for the opposition. What transpires during this time and what he is forced to endure is incredible for anyone, but especially for someone so young. Sullivan exposes the nightmare Pino and all of the citizens faced as they fought against the Germans with whatever means possible. I especially like the insight Sullivan provided for all the characters, good and bad. I was amazed at Pinos composure and steadfastness considering the risks he was taking and the possible outcome.
This book has so many opportunities for discussion and would make an excellent Book Club choice.Back.
