The Hate U Give
by Angie Thomas

Book Review by - Andrea
I usually do not gravitate towards YA, but this debut novel won the audible book of the year in 2017. And it is an NYTimes best seller so, I thought I would give it a try and listen to the audio version. For the record, I have enjoyed some YA books such as the Harry Potter series. The Hate You Give by Angie Thomas covers several serious topics facing society today. Thomas opens a conversation about race relations, police brutality, and moral conscience. It is a story about Star, a teenage girl living in the projects, who attends a predominately white private school in the suburbs surrounded by privilege. One night while in the projects, she sees her unarmed best friend shot and killed by police. Here the journey begins for Star as she finds the courage to fight for her fallen friend. This book reveals the challenges of living and raising children in the projects as well as shining a much-needed light on the consequences of injustice and of staying silent. The book provides an excellent opportunity to discuss racism with your child. Do not miss it.Back.
