This is the classic locked-room whodunit with the perfect ominous setting - the remote wilderness of Michigan. Abigale and Pete are engaged and want their parents to bond and get acquainted before they marry. So, they hire a guide and plan a weekend hiking trip for everyone. The dynamics between these two families is one of the best parts of this cleverly plotted domestic thriller. Pete's parents are resisting the bonding effort, and his mother is very new-age - she loves crystals and tarot cards, and his father is a little rough around the edges. The bride's parents are complete opposites - her mother is a psychiatrist, and her father is a successful businessman. As the story plays out, there are clashes and differences of opinion between the families, which adds depth and complexity to the plot. Then things start to go really wrong; suspense builds as food and medicine go missing, strangers appear, and odd messages are discovered. The wilderness setting adds to the tension, and the story becomes even more engaging and thought-provoking. This is a great suspense story with a unique plot , a few twists, and definitely a good book for anyone who likes a good mystery. |
Book Summary |
It was supposed to be the perfect family weekend away. How could I have known that not all of us would get out of it alive... As soon as I met Pete, I knew he was the one. Sure, our backgrounds are wildly different, but from our first date underneath the stars I've known we were destined for each other. Now we're finally planning our dream wedding. But there's one big problem standing between us and "I do": our parents, who hate each other. So I thought a weekend away hiking would be just the thing. Surely if we all spend some quality time together we can be the big perfect family I've always dreamed of? But then everything starts to go wrong, and as tensions rise we receive a terrible threat... By then it's far too late, as I realize we should never have come here in the first place. Because there's more than just our wedding on the line... by the end of the weekend one of us won't make it out alive. And I have to face the truth: is the killer closer to home than I ever could have imagined? Are they actually one of us? A completely and utterly gripping psychological thriller with a pulse-pounding twist, perfect for fans of Gone Girl, The Marriage, and The Wife Between Us. |
