I love Lisa See and was so happy to see she had another book coming out. In Daughters of the Sun and Moon, she tackles a dark and largely forgotten chapter of American history - the 1871 Los Angeles massacre of Chinese immigrants - and brings it to life through three unforgettable women. Dove, Petal, and Moon each want something different, but all three are fighting the same battle: to be seen and valued in a world that diminishes them at every turn. Lisa See has such a gift for making history feel very personal. Some of this is her strong character development - you come to care about her three main characters, so when they face or witness unspeakable brutality during The Night of Horrors, you feel their pain and helplessness acutely, which adds a profound layer of emotional weight to the story. The courts' failure to deliver real justice will also leave you both heartbroken and uncomfortably aware of how little has changed. This is historical fiction at its finest - well researched, emotionally engaging, impossible to put down. Lisa See never disappoints, and this book is no exception. A must-read. |
