Book Review

(by- Linda )

It Girl is an engaging story set in early 1900s New York, inspired by the true story of Evelyn Nesbit, one of the first "It Girls" of the Gilded Age. The author, Pataki, tells the tale of a young woman named Evelyn who rises from poverty to become a famous Broadway showgirl and an artist's muse. The Gilded Age setting is vivid, and Pataki effectively shows how little power women had despite the glamour. Wealthy men make promises, take what they want, and move on, leaving Evelyn to face the consequences.

The story is mostly realistic, but Pataki changes the ending substantially. And although I thought the ending was very satisfying, it did not seem realistic. If you like historical fiction about strong women who keep fighting, this book is a great choice.
