This book is a keeper. It's a fabulous debut with a leading lady who is just a little wicked but in a good way. I say this both as a female who loves books with strong women and someone who loves clever plots that evoke passion. I liked spending time with Nella as she whipped up her poisons for naughty husbands. I loved that she had rules and principles about which men were "eligible" for her concoctions.
On the other hand, the parallel story in the present day was excellent but not quite as satisfying. I like family drama ( a lot), but I love getting lost in other cultures and periods.
This is a well-paced, very satisfying story about two women who are independent, flawed and seeking truth. Recommend.
