Mad Mabel follows the story of 81-year-old Elsie, who has worked hard to bury her past as "Mad Mabel," the youngest person in Australian history convicted of murder over 60 years ago. However, when an elderly neighbor is found dead, her dark history resurfaces. Before she realizes it, her quiet suburban life is completely upended.
This story is emotional and full of complicated characters, especially Mabel, who is just one of those women that everyone talks about. Probably because she's funny and sharp, but also vulnerable, and who can resist this combination?
But the real strength of this story lies in the beautiful relationships between Mabel and her neighbors, her aunt Cecily, and even those who think they have her figured out (but, of course, don't). Before long, you won't be able to stop thinking about her. I loved how eccentric and unpredictable she was, yet relatable.
This book will appeal to fans of Sally Hepworth and also those who like character-driven domestic suspense. Those who enjoy a mystery with lots of depth will also enjoy it. And finally, anyone drawn to an underestimated female who finally gets to tell her own story and challenge a reputation that has haunted her for decades will enjoy this book.

While I enjoyed Mad Mabel, I have to admit I still liked Sally Hepworth's earlier books - especially The
Mother-In-Law and
Darling Girls - a bit more.
