Never Let Me Go is definiteky a book that stays with you. I read this book somewhere around 2005, when it was first published - and I still remember its impact. It's a story of three friends at an English boarding school, and as it unfolds, what you think is a simple coming-of-age story slowly becomes something much deeper. You will not find dramatic plot twists or a fast-paced plot, but rather a steady emotional pull and universal themes that are some of the most thought-provoking I've read. Ishiguro asks difficult questions about humanity, ethics, and acceptance; the most profound, for me, is where science merges with real life, exploring sacrifice by one group for the benefit of the other. It's an excellent choice for book clubs because there is so much to discuss - from the characters' decisions to the moral questions at the heart of the story. |
