The Underground Railroad follows Cora, a young woman who escapes from a harsh plantation in Georgia, capturing her journey; the fear as well as the hope as she seeks her freedom across different states. The emotional pull and the power of this story stem from the way the author portrays the horrific reality of slavery. He does not try to shield the reader from racism or the dangers Cora and her friend face with each stop. This is not a light read- but it is deeply moving and inspiring. If you're looking for an intense, character-driven story that leaves a massive impression, you absolutely have to read this one. |
