The Yellow Wife follows Pheby, a young enslaved woman promised freedom, but instead sold into one of the most brutal slave jails in Virginia. Pheby has to make impossible choices to protect her children - and her inner struggles are what really pull you into the story. It's a hard read at times-honest, emotional, and sometimes heartbreaking-but also incredibly powerful. Pheby is such a layered character, and you really feel her strength, her fear, and the sacrifices she makes as a mother. If you love character-driven historical fiction with depth (think The Nightingale kind of emotional pull), this is absolutely worth reading, especially for book clubs. |
