Book Review

(by Andrea)
I loved this feel-good original book. Garth Stein not only entertained me but also gave me a newfound appreciation for my dog. Don't shy away from this book if you're not an animal lover. It's about life, love, and relationships. The central character is a lovable and devoted dog named Enzo, who also serves as the narrator. His perspective offers unique insight into human behavior, making this heartfelt, genuine story about life's struggles even more relatable.

Rarely does a book make me laugh out loud and bring me to tears, but this one did. While I would categorize it as a light read, it carries a lot of substance and presents several messages that invite readers to ponder important life questions. The characters are believable and imperfect, providing a realistic portrayal of life. You will not only fall in love with Enzo but also find yourself rooting for his owner, Denny, who is somewhat of an underdog.

Book Summary

Enzo knows he is different from other dogs: a philosopher with a nearly human soul, he has educated himself through television and by listening to the words of his master, Denny Swift, an up-and-coming race car driver.

Through Denny, Enzo gains deep insight into the human condition and sees that life, like racing, isn't just about going fast. As Enzo nears the end of his life, he reflects on everything he has learned. Filled with heart, humor, wisdom, and hope, this unforgettable story celebrates love, family, loyalty, and the belief that every soul is here for a purpose.

4. Can you imagine the story being told from Denny's perspective? How would it change the novel?

5. Enzo believes his soul is human. How does this affect his worldview? What do you think about reincarnation and karma?

6. Do you look at your own dog differently after reading this book?

7. What parallels exist between the art of racing and the art of living?
