The Heaven & Earth Grocery Store

by James McBride
This book is both a mystery and historical fiction. It shows the power of the human spirit and sheds light on a period of history exploring themes of racial and ethnic relations and social justice.

Book Review

This book is a literary gem. McBride is a National Book Award winner, and his writing is exquisite. I became wholly immersed in this Historical Fiction/Mystery about this small rural community named "Chicken Hill" in Pottstown, Pennsylvania. Set in the 1930s, the residents of this community are primarily Black and Jewish, but not far away, it is a white community.

Social tensions, racism, and injustice are themes throughout the story as McBride weaves a tale of mystery and intrigue. However, this story is so much more than a mystery. It's uplifting and eye-opening and would give your Book Club much to discuss. Don't miss this one!
