A tiny kitten with a medical defect needs an expensive surgery. Samantha takes him to a vet, Xavier, who suggests euthanasia because the cost is prohibitively expensive. Samantha's reaction is priceless. I won't say more, except that after she goes into action, I knew Samantha was determined, deeply caring, and resourceful, and I couldn't wait to know more. I also loved Xavier, a character who shows his care through actions rather than just words. It's a romance, so they end up going on one incredible date. But right as a spark lights up between them, Samantha has to pack her bags and move 2,000 miles away to care for her mother, who has early-onset dementia. I loved that even though this is an easy-to-read and enjoyable romance, it has real-world weight. There's a lot of focus on family duty, grief, and the hard choices we make when life gets complicated - which keeps the story grounded. The story moves at a good pace, and Jimenez does a solid job of making the relationship feel genuine rather than rushed. Fans of contemporary romance will find it familiar and comforting. However, the story tackles many heavy topics at once. Between the long-distance relationship and the family struggle, the middle can feel a bit crowded with conflict, so it's probably not Jimenez's strongest novel. However, it is completely enjoyable. Recommend. |
