The Unselected Journals of Emma M. Lion: Vol. 1

by Beth Brower
The Unselected Journals of Emma M. Lion by Beth Brower book cover Victorian London journal novel
(by Andrea)

I couldn't put this book down. I loved the protagonist Emma Lion and her feisty determination in the late Victorian era. The story begins in London, 1883. Emma moves into Lapis Lazuli, a home she inherited from her father. She is given the garret as her living quarters, a small area on the top floor in need of repair, while her cousin Archibald stays in the main part of the house. This sets the mood of society in 1800s London and the roles, or lack of roles, for women at that time.

This little gem of a book is smart, entertaining, funny, and one you don't want to miss. This is volume 1 of 8 books so far. It's character-driven, written in journal form, which makes it feel personal.

I'm already hooked after reading a little over 100 pages. I can't wait to start volume 2!
