Workhorse

by Caroline Palmer
Workhorse by Caroline Palmer book cover contemporary fiction workplace novel
(by Andrea)

I listened to this book on audio, and it was fantastic. I absolutely loved it! Normally, I avoid long audiobooks because I tend to lose interest or get distracted by the storyline. However, with this one, I found myself carving out time for my next chance to listen.

The story centers on Clo, a young woman just beginning her career at a New York City fashion magazine. She comes from a modest background, having attended a lesser-known college and lacking any connections. In contrast, her new friend Davis is the daughter of a famous actress and a graduate of an Ivy League school.

Clo is seen as a workhorse, while Davis is viewed as a showhorse. Clo has to work much harder, while Davis seems to skate through life. We get a behind-the-scenes look at how these different backgrounds drive decisions that affect both women. Their insecurities and desperation lead to some questionable choices. I even found myself thinking, "No, don't do it." The book is thought-provoking in a challenging way, with characters who are not always likable. That alone would make it a fantastic Book Club pick, but there's so much more to discuss: not only Clo and Davis, but Davis's mother, a few friends you meet along the way, and the workplace dynamics. Don't miss this one.
