Book Review

(by- Linda )

The Young Will Remember is an emotional story that slowly pulls you in. The story is set in 1950 during the Korean War. It follows Ellie Chang, a Chinese American journalist, who is shot down over North Korea, and her journey as she tries to get back home, making it an incredible story of survival.

What really stayed with me were the characters and their courage and perseverance during these uncertain and dangerous times. The writing is thoughtful and detailed, with a lot of history about the people and the war without being overly heavy.

But it's not just about war - it's also about how violence effects a person's identity. And I loved that, while so many war stories center on men, Chung gives voice to the women living through it, who hold families and each other together. Chung is actually a human rights lawyer, and it shows - she digs into things like wartime sexual violence and the bombing of civilians.

It's a refreshing change to get historical fiction about the Korean War from the perspective of a female Chinese-American journalist or the local women living through it. If you love character-driven stories that balance history with really deep, emotional human choices, do not miss this one.
