Book Summary |
A Time of Witches is a gothic novel with two timelines, written by the author of The Last Bookshop in London. In the present day, strange things happen in Lilith's life after her mother's death. She notices plants leaning toward her, animals following her, and a birthmark on her arm tingling. Also, she keeps dreaming that she is being burned at the stake. Seeking answers, she travels from Savannah to Brackenmere Manor, a crumbling English estate where past and present blur and she uncovers an unwanted inheritance that puts her in danger. In 1645 Suffolk, Sybil Brantham, an educated, wealthy widow, is accused of witchcraft by men threatened by her independence, and she must protect her younger sister as betrayal brews in her own home. The two women are connected by blood, and each must find her voice to survive. Is A Time of Witches Worth Reading? If you enjoy stories set in the past that feature strong women and a hint of magic, this book is a great choice. It is inspired by the true events of the witch trials in East Anglia and mentions the real people who were affected, which makes the story feel very powerful and meaningful. It explores how independent women were silenced and punished, while also celebrating sisterhood, nature, and courage. It's a great choice for fans of Weywardor anyone drawn to atmospheric, dual-timeline stories about women reclaiming their power. The historical chapters are the book's strongest part, so readers who lean toward history over modern-day storylines may enjoy it most.
