I couldn't put this book down! It's a retelling of The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn from Jim, the enslaved person's perspective. The author does an excellent job of giving you an intimate glimpse of Jim's life. Jim runs away to avoid being sold to another owner, leaving his family behind, but vows to return and rescue. Here begins his wild journey in search of freedom. Jim shows how he copes with his limitations and how it feels to be owned by another. It is astonishing to read about his general lack of freedom and the little value placed on his being. Still, the author delivers an original, clever, and beautifully written book. I can't say enough about how much I enjoyed this book. I am so glad I read it. Don't miss it! |
