Marguerite by the Lake

by Mary Dixie Carter
Marguerite by the Lake by Mary Dixie Carter book cover – atmospheric mystery about wealth, secrets, and hidden motives at a lake house

Book Review

(by- Linda )

Marguerite by the Lake is beautiful and moody, which will bring to mind Daphne du Maurier's classic Rebecca - and that is very much a compliment.

Carter excels at building tension, with much of the story unfolding in the mind of the main character, Phoenix, as she confronts her fears of exposure and struggles with feelings of not belonging. The story is character-driven, focusing more on emotional connections and an intriguing mystery than on a twisty thriller.

So, if you're in the mood for a fast-paced psychological thriller with unexpected twists, this may not be for you. This is far more a gothic mystery than a thriller, and readers who know this will likely love it. The intrigue is absolutely there - big twists - not so much.

One final thought- the ending feels somewhat forced and unresolved - that not everyone will find satisfying. It is the one element that keeps this from being a five-star read.

That said, for fans of atmospheric, character-driven mysteries with a gothic sensibility - particularly those who loved Rebecca- give this a try.
