Mistress of Rome

by Kate Quinn
Cover of 'Mistress of Rome' by Kate Quinn showing a Roman woman overlooking ancient ruins, symbolizing survival, ambition, and power in the Roman Empire.

Book Review

(by Linda)
Ancient Rome is richly portrayed with vivid detail and well researched historical accuracy. Quinn tells the story through three perspectives: Thea, a captive Jewish slave girl; Arius, a fierce and haunted gladiator; and Lepida, a privileged Roman noblewoman driven by jealousy and ambition.

The book explores the harsh reality of slavery, the brutality of the gladiatorial arena, and the political corruption of Emperor Domitian's Rome. Violence, treachery, and survival dominate the narrative.

The alternating points of view can be disorienting at times, and some scenes rely heavily on dialogue, but the novel excels in world building and layered character development. The plot is sweeping, emotional, and dramatic - a compelling epic for fans of historical fiction with strong characters and powerful themes.

Book Summary

The first in a sweeping historical saga, 'Mistress of Rome' follows Thea, a captive from Judaea who survives through intelligence, resilience, and a hidden gift for music. Purchased by Lepida Pollia - a spoiled Roman heiress - Thea endures cruelty while secretly dreaming of a better life.

When she falls in love with Arius the Barbarian, Rome's most savage and celebrated gladiator, Lepida's jealousy sets a devastating chain of events in motion. The lovers are torn apart, and Thea must rebuild her life under the shadow of Rome's elite.

Rising from slave to celebrated singer, Thea attracts the dangerous interest of Emperor Domitian, a man whose passions wield deadly consequences. Meanwhile, a collection of senators, soldiers, gladiators, and priestesses plot to challenge the Emperor's rule.

In the end, the fate of Rome's most powerful man rests in the hands of one woman - the Emperor's mistress.

Discussion Questions

1. From the moment we meet Arius we are also introduced to his inner demon. At his core the Barbarian is a noble and kind hearted soul, while the voice that haunts him is a ruthless killer. How do you think this monologue began? How can his son avoid inheriting this curse?

2. Sold into slavery and torn away from her true love, Thea carries guilt and shame over her family's murder. How does spilling her own blood help her cope? Which other characters display similar self destructive behaviors and why?

3. Thea admits she never truly knows Emperor Domitian. Does any character know him? Why does he place trust where he does?

4. One theme is forbidden relationships. Why do Nessus and Ganymede hide their romance? What other characters must conceal relationships, romantic or otherwise?

5. Lepida's cruelty toward Thea is extreme. Does Thea ever reciprocate? Do either of them show mercy? Discuss their master-slave dynamic.

6. Nessus predicts Arius will die by fire, by the sword, and as an old man. Did he ever die by the sword? What might this prophecy mean?

7. The Empress Julia, Lady Julia, and Thea all fear Domitian. What draws the Emperor to each woman? How do women empower themselves or others despite great obstacles?

8. Lepida despises Sabina. Why does she hate her daughter? Why reject the chance for loyalty and devotion?

9. Should Marcus have divorced Lepida? Could he have exposed her? Who might have helped him protect his family?

10. Loyalty and betrayal are central themes. Why does Paulinus remain loyal to Domitian? Why betray those who care for him?

11. Discuss the impact of class in Rome. Beyond lineage, deceit, and ownership, how else can characters rise socially?

12. Power shifts constantly. Who is the most powerful person in Rome and why?

13. Paulinus' obsession with Lepida is addictive. What draws him to her beyond physical desire?

14. Lepida judges Thea for the acts forced upon her - yet chooses infidelity herself. What double standards exist in the story?

15. After an unsettling moment with the Emperor, Marcus pleads with Calpurnia to remain betrothed. Did their relationship grow from this? Why does she stay?
