One Thousand White Women

by Jim Fergus
An interesting take on what could have been if the Government had accepted an offer from the Native American Indians to exchange 100 horses for 1000 white women. One Thousand White Women by Jim Fergus>

Book Review

After reading the jacket cover of ONE THOUSAND WHITE WOMEN, I was completely intrigued. The premise of the book is the American Government hands over one thousand women to a tribe of Cheyenne Indians. The women are to marry and have children with the Indians in order to help them assimilate into the white man's society. I was hooked from the beginning as the story explores the beliefs of the 1800's, especially attitudes towards women and the Indian's culture.

The author Jim Fergus does a tremendous job of drawing you in and exploring the many fascinating avenues this book presents. It is beautifully written with strong characters and filled with adventure, romance, culture, and some violence. Set in the Wild West it is a fabulous love story packed with action and gets your imagination going. A great read with lots of topics to discuss. It would make a terrific book club selection.
