The Road to Tender Hearts

by Annie Hartnett
The Road to Tender Hearts by Annie Hartnett book cover featuring a heartfelt contemporary fiction story about family, grief, and second chances
(by Andrea)

Annie Hartnett is a new author to me, but a friend highly recommended this book, so I had to give it a try. The story can be dark at times as it explores themes such as grief and family drama, but it is also both heartbreaking and funny. Readers who enjoyed The Heaven and Earth Grocery Store or Theo of Golden will likely appreciate this novel as well. It's similar in that it revolves around a found family, quirky characters, and a strong sense of community.

This character-driven, slightly offbeat story pulls you into the life of PJ Halliway, a middle-aged man down on his luck and searching for a second chance. He sets out on a cross-country road trip with a few family members to find his long-lost high school sweetheart, hoping for a reunion.

I loved this book, the characters, and Hartnett's perspective that it's never too late to start over. She does a beautiful job of showing how fragile life can be, which is something we can all relate to. I look forward to reading more from this author. It will make a great Book Club choice.
