The Compound by Aisling Rowe is set on a remote desert compound where contestants compete on a reality TV show. Unfortunately, the place needs some serious repairs. There are some rules that, for the reader, are intriguing: If you do not wake up in the morning next to someone (of the opposite sex), you lose and you're out. To earn food, supplies, and items necessary to make the compound livable (such as air conditioning or water), contestants must complete specific tasks. The contestants also must complete other tasks to win personal luxury items. But there is a distinct dystopian feel to it all. The tasks get more complex and darker, encouraging emotional distress and humiliation. The story delves deeply into identity & gender issues by enforcing traditional gender roles and rewarding women & men differently. Toxic masculinity & superficial femininity surface. In what seems like a fun reality competition, there is a lot to unpack. This is an excellent book for fans of reality TV, those who enjoy dark social satire, survival fiction, or psychological thrillers. |
