Hollow Bones

by Jodi Picoult
Hollow Bones by Jodi Picoult book cover - contemporary fiction about postpartum psychosis, family relationships, grief, forgiveness, and the lasting impact of 9/11
(by Andrea)

Jodi Picoult masterfully writes about real-life issues and events from multiple perspectives, making her novels fantastic for book club discussions. I’m always surprised by how much I learn from each of her books.

In this novel, Picoult sheds light on postpartum psychosis (PPP), its impact on mothers, the lack of available resources, and the lasting effects of the tragic events of 9/11. She also addresses grief, forgiveness, family relationships, and love.

Molly was just 2 months old on 9/11 when the towers fell. Her mother went to a doctor’s appointment at the World Trade Center and never came home. Her stepmother, her mother’s best friend, raised her, but she struggles with the grief of not knowing her biological mother.

I liked the characters in this story; they were complex and genuine, and I appreciated not liking them all and disagreeing with some of their decisions. However, I thought the ending was a little contrived, but it was still a powerful read.

As I read this story, I was surprised by how much I remembered from that day. I remembered how the world came together, how ordinary people performed extraordinary acts, and the profound loss of life. The heroes who answered the call of duty showed remarkable bravery; I'll never forget it.

This is an emotional read and one you’ll want to share with friends.
